Seven signs of an electrical emergency
Electrical problems can worsen quickly. If there is fire, heavy smoke, arcing or an immediate danger to people, leave the area and call 911. Do not touch damaged equipment or use water on energized electrical components.
1. A persistent burning smell
An unexplained plastic or insulation smell near a panel, outlet or appliance can indicate overheating. Stop using the affected circuit if this can be done safely and call an electrician.
2. Smoke, sparks or visible arcing
Occasional tiny sparks when plugging in some loads are not the same as repeated arcing, smoke or bright flashes. Keep away from the equipment and treat active arcing as urgent.
3. A wet electrical panel
Water entering a panel or meter enclosure can energize metal parts and damage breakers. Do not open the cover or attempt to dry it. Keep your distance and contact the appropriate emergency service.
4. Hot or discoloured outlets
An outlet, switch or cover plate that becomes hot, darkened or deformed may have a loose connection. Unplug equipment only if it is clearly safe to do so.
5. Repeated breaker trips
Resetting a breaker repeatedly does not solve the cause. A recurring trip can indicate an overload, short circuit, ground fault or defective equipment.
6. Buzzing or crackling
Electrical equipment should not produce persistent crackling sounds. Noise from a panel, meter base or service entrance requires prompt evaluation.
7. A damaged service entrance
Storms, branches or vehicle impacts can pull the mast, meter base or conductors away from a building. Stay away from fallen lines and contact Hydro-Québec for utility-side hazards.

When calling, describe the smell, noise, heat, smoke, location and whether the problem affects one circuit or the whole property. Photos can help only when they can be taken without approaching a hazard.
